Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing ( EMDR)
EMDR is a psychotherapy treatment that was originally designed to alleviate the distress associated with traumatic memories (Shapiro, 1989a, 1989b). EMDR uses bilateral processes to enable the healing of the symptoms of emotional and psychological distress that resulted from a disturbing life event. EMDR shows that the mind can in fact heal from psychological trauma, much as the body recovers from physical trauma. The brain’s information processing system naturally moves towards mental health. If the system is blocked or imbalanced by a disturbing life event, the emotional wounds fester and can cause intense suffering. Once the block is removed, healing resumes (EMDR Institute, Inc). EMDR is useful for the treatment of the symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and has been successful in treating conditions such as anxiety and panic attacks, depression, OCD, eating disorders phobias, complicated grief, pain relief, self-esteem, performance anxiety and many more mental health conditions
